how we do it
To help us easily achieve the colors you’re looking for in your scans please send reference photos to vibes@scottvophotography.com
The Noritsu scanner is widely recognized for its impressive size, as it has the capability to output files up to 5000px wide and either 6500px (645 format) or 7500px (35mm format) long. This means that it is capable of producing substantial prints. For photography enthusiasts like us, the Noritsu HS-1800 offers the added advantage of generating 16-bit files, resulting in a broader color spectrum between transitions and gradients. If you’re looking for impeccable shadow detail and smoothness, then the Noritsu scanner is undoubtedly the ideal choice.
The Noritsu scans retain more texture, allowing for a clearer view of the grain structure. When these scans are transferred to paper, they enhance the sharpness of the image, seamlessly blending in with the paper's texture. Consequently, even large prints can maintain their sharpness and clarity, all at an affordable scanning price.
Comparison of Noritsu and Frontier Printers in Image Quality
In images with significant differences between highlights and shadows, with the majority of the content residing in gray areas, the Noritsu demonstrates superior contrast and color reproduction compared to the Frontier printer. However, it is worth noting that the Noritsu tends to produce a more monochromatic tone in the shadows, often exhibiting a slightly greenish tint. This can be rectified through split toning techniques. On the other hand, the Frontier printer reveals hints of magenta in certain areas. We acknowledge that our analysis may appear excessively technical to some, but we delve deep into the intricacies of image production.
Additionally, keen observers can discern variations in skin tones. The Noritsu printer imparts a slightly reddish hue to subjects, while the Frontier printer leans toward a more neutral tone in this regard. As evident from our observations, the Noritsu printer occasionally delivers a cleaner and more consistent appearance with lower contrast, yet retaining greater texture in the grain. Notably, one noticeable divergence between the two printers lies in the enhanced vibrancy of greens exhibited by the Noritsu, particularly pronounced when dealing with landscape and architectural imagery. Moreover, when processing images with a wide dynamic range, the Noritsu excels at maintaining a neutral output that preserves intricate details across all areas.
We hope this forensic examination into the nuances of these printers has intrigued you, even if it indulges our nerdy/geeky/freaky interests in the subject matter.
